More Protein. Uneven Profits.
Why rising protein demand produces different earnings for Glanbia and BellRing.

Roughly one in five US households now includes a GLP-1 user. This report follows that shift past the drug makers to 67 companies, from protein suppliers to sleep-apnea devices, and tests where it is reaching earnings.
Reflexivity's Knowledge Graph covers 800+ themes and maps how companies connect to themes, products and each other. We used it to trace GLP-1 through the market, then tested each connection against company results, policy data and patient studies.
Research question
What must become true for broader, increasingly oral and cash-pay GLP-1 adoption to change earnings of companies outside drug manufacturers?
Why rising protein demand produces different earnings for Glanbia and BellRing.
Download PDFWhat wider access means for prescription platforms, companion care and sleep treatment.
Download PDFAdoption is broad enough to affect household behavior. Earnings transmission still depends on revenue concentration, competitive structure, input costs and whether the operating channel is substituted or expanded.
The treated cohort is now large enough for category effects, but not for automatic company-level attribution.

Cash-pay pills broaden access while employer and Medicaid1 obesity coverage remains constrained.

1 Medicaid: US federal–state health coverage for eligible people with limited income.
Current evidence supports three positive and three negative operating signals. Counterexamples prevent a simple long-protein / short-snacks interpretation.
Glanbia (GL9): Optimum Nutrition +25.2% in H1; FY2026 earnings guidance raised.
ResMed (RMD): Sleep & Breathing Health +9%.
Omada Health (OMDA): members +45%; guidance raised.
Medifast (MED): revenue −75% from FY2021–FY2025.
Simply Good Foods (SMPL): Atkins −24.6%.
Inspire Medical Systems (INSP): revenue −7.6%, with reimbursement confounding.
BellRing Brands (BRBR) has healthy demand but weaker earnings.
Lindt & Sprüngli (LISN), Monster Beverage (MNST) and Coca-Cola (KO) challenge the simple food-and-drink short thesis.
Hims & Hers (HIMS) and GoodRx (GDRX) remain conditional access exposures.
Cash-pay and temporary Medicare2 access widen use while commercial coverage remains sticky. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary access program for eligible Part D3 beneficiaries. The effects then split: pressure on diet programs, stronger protein demand and changes in treatment and companion care.

2 Medicare: US federal health insurance, primarily for people age 65 and older.
3 Part D: Medicare’s prescription-drug benefit.
Rising protein demand can benefit whey suppliers while higher ingredient costs and heavier promotion squeeze branded producers, including ready-to-drink (RTD) shake brands. Glanbia and BellRing illustrate that divergence; the evidence does not establish a direct supply relationship between them.

Positive airway pressure (PAP) uses pressurized air to keep airways open during sleep; CPAP is one type of PAP. ResMed’s claims analysis finds PAP initiation 10.8 percentage points higher among obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients prescribed a GLP-1, with higher resupply. A separate Komodo analysis finds lower CPAP initiation after tirzepatide. Inspire’s near-term weakness is real but confounded by coding, and management sees a long-term pipeline catalyst as more high-BMI patients qualify.

Premium products, functional drinks, smaller portions and diversified portfolios can cushion lower consumption. Acquisitions can also change the investment outcome.

High-end whey demand and pricing benefit the supplier layer while branded protein margins absorb input costs and promotion.

Lower prior-authorization activity could reduce McKesson (MCK) services-segment operating-income growth by 5–10%, based on an RBC estimate.

Lindt-sponsored Circana data show GLP-1 users’ premium-chocolate sales up about 17% in 2025, against 6.5% for non-users. Selection bias remains.

DaVita (DVA) frames lower mortality as a long-run dialysis-duration tailwind—a counterintuitive, unquantified path.

The table keeps structural exposure separate from the latest company result. A positive theme with a negative KPI remains a counterexample, not a beneficiary. Prices are 28 September 2026 intraday values.

GLP-1s are reshaping more than appetite. They put pressure on diet programs, shift protein economics and alter routes into treatment and companion care. The next tests are concrete: supplier pricing versus branded margins, independent CPAP evidence, and durable growth in care and access platforms. Those results—not category labels—will determine where the earnings opportunity holds.

Evidence strength governs the language.
The analysis separates structural exposure, current operating signal, attributable catalyst and company materiality. Facts, enacted policy, surveys, observational studies, randomized trials and inference are labeled distinctly. First-order manufacturers are context only.
No weights are shown because volatility, liquidity, correlation, borrow and short-interest inputs were unavailable. Restaurants, alcohol, apparel and airlines lack company-level GLP-1 attribution. ResMed and Omada outcome evidence is company-sponsored; Glanbia’s bilateral relationship with BellRing is not documented.
